  5.      This  information  is  prepared  by  the Radio Society of Great
  6. Britain and broadcast each Sunday on the 80, 40 and 2 metre bands by
  7. stations in all parts of the country.

  10.      This is the  GB2RS  news  broadcast  for  the  week  commencing
  11. Sunday, 25th August.

  15. SOLAR FACTUAL DATA
  16. ------------------
  17.  
  18.      We  begin  this week with the solar factual data for the period
  19. between the 11th and the 17th of August.  There  was  a  decline  in
  20. solar  flux  levels  during this period and a level of only 66 units
  21. was recorded on the 13th. This is amongst the lowest level  recorded
  22. during  the  current cycle. The average for the period was 67 units.
  23. The geomagnetic A index has continued to decline from  its  recently
  24. active  state  and  it  was  down  to quiet levels by the end of the
  25. period. The average was 8 units, although a level of  only  5  units
  26. was recorded on the 16th.
  27.      The  sunspot count has returned to zero for most days and there
  28. is only one potential spotted region currently present on  the  sun.
  29. The  solar wind particle input has been very low. The Inda index for
  30. the period between the 4th and the 10th of August was quiet.

  32. IONOSPHERIC DATA FOR ENGLAND & WALES
  33. ------------------------------------

  35.      The F2 critical frequency daily highs at  Appleton  averaged  6
  36. MHz  over the period. However, the figures varied between 6.7 MHz on
  37. the 12th and 5.3 MHz on the 15th. These variations appear to be on a
  38. random basis, with no discernible pattern. The  darkness  hour  lows
  39. averaged 2.8 MHz and held up well, although seasonal changes are now
  40. expected  to  force  these  levels  down.  Spread  F  was  reported,
  41. particularly on the 12th and 13th, which did not  help.  Sporadic  E
  42. was reported on most days and lasted for up to 5 hours on the 15th.

  44. IONOSPHERIC DATA FOR SCOTLAND AND N. IRELAND

  48.      The  F2  critical  frequency daily highs at South Uist averaged
  49. 5.2 MHz. Day-to-day variations between 4.7 MHz on the 10th  and  5.7
  50. MHz on the 17th were recorded. Sporadic E was reported at odd times,
  51. particularly between the 10th and the 14th. It lasted for 4 hours on
  52. the  11th.  The darkness hour lows averaged 2.2 MHz but spread F was
  53. reported on most days. The present levels could well be affected  by
  54. the  seasonal  changes  which  are  slowly  taking place and also by
  55. geomagnetic changes which tend to have more effect in the north.

  57. SOLAR FORECAST
  58. --------------
  59.  
  60.      The only potentially spotted region at present on the sun  will
  61. rotate  into  view  this  week. However, not much is expected of it.
  62. Solar activity is expected to remain very  low.  The  Solar  Maximum
  63. Mission  satellite  has  recorded  coronal mass ejections, which are
  64. partly due to the remnants  of  filament  disappearance.  This  will
  65. probably  maintain  geomagnetic  activity at up to unsettled levels,
  66. sub-storms may be reached on the 28th or  29th.  Ionospheric  levels
  67. are  expected  to  deteriorate  as  the  week continues and northern
  68. stations especially could be affected by the  expected  increase  in
  69. magnetic  activity. F2 critical frequency levels will probably be at
  70. their lowest for the present rotation, levels may only reach  around
  71. 4.5 MHz in the north and 5.5 MHz in the south.

  73.      And  now the rest of the news - as a matter of fact there isn't
  74. a great deal this week, probably because many radio amateurs are out
  75. of their shacks and soaking up the sunshine by the seaside.

  77.      For some months the Society has been considering  its  position
  78. with  regard  to  the  new  strategy  being  operated  by  the Radio
  79. Investigation Service of the Department of Trade and Industry.  This
  80. topic  was  reported in detail in the April 1986 edition of the RSGB
  81. Bulletin and since then the Society has been considering what action
  82. it should take. The September edition of the Bulletin, which will be
  83. sent to members in a week or so, carries an outline of the Society's
  84. initial intentions with regard  to  EMC  problems  which  can  arise
  85. between radio amateurs and neighbours. Members are asked to look out
  86. for this item and read it carefully.

  88.      The  Telford  Mobile Rally takes place next Sunday, the 31st of
  89. August. The venue this year  is  the  Telford  Racquet  and  Fitness
  90. Centre,  which  is close to the old venue of Telford Town Centre. As
  91. well as numerous trade stands there will be a giant flea  market;  a
  92. town  park  next  to  the centre has attractions for all the family,
  93. including children. There is also an ice rink next  to  the  centre,
  94. which will  suit the energetic. Talk-in will be available via GB4TRG
  95. on  S22 and SU8 and catering and bar facilities will be available on

  100. Special event stations to listen for this week include:- 
  101.  
  102. GB2NWR  -  until  the  25th  of August - Bank Holiday Monday, at the
  103. Harewood Steam Rally. 
  104.  
  105. GB2RGD - on the  30th  of  August  at  Clydale  Training  Centre  at
  106. Woodford Bridge. The station will be active from 9am until 6pm clock
  107. time  on  HF, VHF and possibly 70 cms  celebrate the public open day
  108. at the Dog Training Centre. 
  109.  
  110. GB2GWR - today at the steam-up day of the Gwili Railway at  Bronwydd
  111. Arms  Station,  near  Carmarthen, Swansea Amateur Radio Society will
  112. operate mainly on HF, but VHF will be used as much as  the  location
  113. allows. 
  114.  
  115. GB6SLS  - until the 30th of August at Walesby Forest Scout Camp near
  116. Newark, Nottinghamshire. This is the  camp  of  the  88th  Leicester
  117. Scout  Group.  Due  to  the  camp's strict schedule, operating times
  118. might be difficult to schedule, but it  is  expected  to  be  active
  119. during the late evenings. Operation will be on 2 metres, both on SSB
  120. and FM
  121.  
  122.  GB6APS  -  at the Abbey Park Show in Leicester on the 25th and 26th
  123. of August. There will be special QSL cards available and the station
  124. is open to visitors.

  126. GB4NCR - until the 26th of August at the  Northern  Centres  Caravan
  127. Rally at Bedale in North Yorkshire. The station is run by members
